Zhiwa Ling

BUILD from the timber of the 450-year-old Gangtey Monastery, Zhiwa Ling, withits hand-carved wooden beams and hand-painted ceilings, is a splendid example of Bhutanese architecture. All the rooms have balconies that look out onto blue pine forests and spectacular mountain ranges; the floors are oak and hand-knotted rugs and vibrant tapestries all add warmth and colour to the hotel. The Mad Monk Bar, with its large fireplace and wide windows is where you should go to try a traditional ‘dragon warmer’. The country’s highest motorable pass, Chelela Pass, is close to Zhiwa Ling, as is the 15th century Dunsti Lakhang Temple, Takshang Monastery, and the Kyuchu Temple, which plays a large role in the area’s many legends.
