In a beach town, populated by a seafaring community, a shipyard is hardly likely to raise eyebrows. But an ex-shipyard that now functions as a hotel? Well, that’s bound to impress. Brunton Boatyard, to put it simply, is just that. Over 100 years ago, it was a thriving boat-building facillity in Kochi patronised by the British, but after Birtish competitors protested it was shut down. After going to seed for many decades, it was renovated, but there’s no getting away from the strong nautical association at This now-posh hotel. The high ceilings, large halls and unending passages all indicate the building’s history, as do the many artifacts and the plush furniture that bears a distinct colonial stamp. A series of stern-looking visages in sepia glower from the walls, including that of Vasco da Gama.
