SEE the shadows lengthen, the dust rising from the hooves of cattle, a golden-backed woodpecker spiraling across a field. Walk around a lake through dew-wet grass. That’s life at Cardamom House. A comfortable home with a farm next door and people waiting on you, hand and foot. This is essentially simple living, with just eight large rooms, and no internet, you’ll have to figure out what to eat in advance since there’s no freeze either. But there are books in every room and library, as well as a verandah that’s perfect for whiling away hot afternoons. You can sketch and press plants, or walk to the waterfalls and the cave temple, hand in hand down the singnposted ways. Local guides will take you to Athoor Village market or you can drive down to Dindigul fort, 45 minutes away.
