Chandelaogarh

This pink-walled fort, built in 1744 is not on the beaten track, but is close enough to Jodhpur’s attractiona to make it must visit destination. Do visit the fabulous Umaid Bhavan, one of the more fascinating palaces in Jodhpur. Mehrangarh fort and Jaswant Thada, the cenotaph built o commemorate Maharaja Jaswant Singh, is definitely worth a visit. Here in Chandelao, women still pump water at the wells and life at the edge of the Thar Desert contiues as it has, for centuries. Ornate, covered in portraits, and accented with the tiger skins of hunting trips gone by, Chandelaogarh is a curious mix of antiquity and local colour. Family furniture, photograph albums, treasured antiques and beckoning wicker charis make you feel as if you’re guest in someone’s home, rather than a luxury hotel. Stroll around, and immerse yourself in the stories and colour of an 18th century residence.
