Royal Heritage-Tripura Castle

The Royal Heritage Tripura Castle is all that the name indicates. It is royal, full of heritage, typically local and a castle all right. The magnificent building was the summer retreat of the royals of the Manikya Dynasty and is now the foremost heritage hotel in the northeast. A winding road leading up to the hotel is lined with pine tress, bamboo clumps and cherry blossoms, providing just the right introduction to the splendid palace. Located in a sprawling wooded area of about 17 acres, the building is an architectural pleasure. There’s no better place to start imbibing local culture than the cuisine, and you can get a taste of authentic khasi bites at the hotel’s restaurant.

It’s not a city that most people would think of as a culinary destination, but we can only say It’s their loss. Shillong is a town in which to savour a vast range of non-vegetarian fare, and to really get adventurous about it (think pigs’ brains and fried rice flavoured with blood). You can also opt to fill up on momos and jadoh, a spicy rice and pork preparation, or try some pickled bamboo shoot. Top it all off with yet, the local brew made from rice, plum rum or cherry brandy. And all This while you relaxes in the summer palace of the maharajas of Tripura’s Manikya dynasty. Surrounded by pine and bamboo trees, the Tripura Castle is an oasis of calm and comfort.
