Royal Oasis and the Residency

the Gothic Ranjit Vilas palace dominates the Otherwise flat skyline of wankaner. On its grounds stand a former Residency and an art deco guesthouse (the oasis) of the royal family. Hidden in the garden is the three-storey Art Deco stepwell, that begs to be explored, and even the swimming pool is a design gem. There’s nothing remotely deco, however, about your next stop, the Wankaner market, which offers up some wonderful pottery. Rajkot, the nearest big town, is the place to go for silver jewellery and for its variation on the gorgeous silk patola sari, colours flaming bright and designs a unique mix of geometric patterns and folk motifs. A longer Journey yields richer results; a trip to Bhuj rewards you with colourful textiles and intricate tie-and –dye work the entire Kutch region is famous for.
