Surya Samudra Beach Garden

the first heritage hotel in kerala, the Surya Samudra Beach Garden is set in a cocount grove between two deserted beaches. Twenty-one cottages with open-air bathrooms cling to the hillside. There’s pool carved out of an old stone quarry and a teak shack that serves as a restaurant. The food at the resort has been much lauded over the years and a meal, or two, at the resort’s seafood restaurant. The Octopus, is a must. Dishes on the menu include everything from barracuda puttu to sea urchins, baked crab and lobster crème de la mer. Local dishes are served on plantain leaves and much of the produce used is organic. But that’s no reason not to be greedy and head out to town for a kerala thali, appams and stew.
