Z Hotel

This sprawling bungalow was once known as Amulya Bhavan, and belonged to the Raja of Sermpore. Vestiges of its royal heritage are still evident in the high-ceilinged building and its updated colonial furniture. Rooms in the hotel are generous on space and have attached bathrooms and a sea view. A balcony too, if you are on the first floor. There’s sense of peace on the property that may have something to do with its vaastu compliant architecture. The markets are terribly alluring, as Orissa handicrats are distinctly different. There are intricately woodworked toys, bolws, boxes and masks; there are kitschy seashell products and beautiful silver filigree ones; there’s terracotta in many forms, from artefacts to jewellery, dhokra metal work and of course, the famed ikat saris.
