The Hidden forest

The waters of the sacred and serene Changu lake break free from their cage of ice, and the hill come alive with rthododendrons, iris, primulas and poppies. Changu lies 19km from the Chinese border and is reached by a narrow road that snakes precariously through the mountains. The lake is frozen for most of the year but bursts into ripples between May and August. Photography is restricted since the area is an army base, and most totuists need permits to visit the lake. Base yourself at the Hidden forest Retreat when you visit, where three acres of lush gardens welcome you, and the loudest sound you’ll hear is the chirping of crickets.
