This beautifully restored colonial building in the centre of the city oozes old-world charm. One of the grand dames of the East, It’s period piece in teak, with rattan furniture and colonial furniture. Its rooms are spacious, elegantly spartan in keeping with the country’s décor sensibilities though thankfully there’s no luxury spared when it comes to the huge bathrooms and their bathtubs. They’ve even got a shop that stocks quality hadn picked items. Not a place for bargains though, for that you’d have to head to Bogyoke market, which has the largest selection of merchandise you’ll find under one roof. Besided Burmese souvenirs there’s everything from lacquerware, leather works and tapestires to Shane shoulder bags, T-shirts and cherroots, Stop at Art Only and Augustine’s Antique Shop for lacquerware, wood carings, art and antiques.
Over a century old, the Strand encapsulates all that is typically Burmese. The stunning building my be Victorian in outlook, and is carefully preserved to showcase the beauty of the early years of the last century, but there’s also much here that is an amalgamation of its history, culture and heritage. The tiled wooden and marble floors, the elegant colonnades, carved teak balustrades, chandeliers and a great collection of art and antiques give the hotel a unique character. The theme continues into the luxurious suites and spread of local cuisine and the Strand Boutique offers some exquisite knick-knacks. Outside, the majestic Shwedagon pagoda sparkles at night.
