39. The Dwarikas

HERITAGE hotels don’t come more special than Dwarika’s in Kathmandu. Paved courtyards, pools and fountains set off the ornate brick-and wood buildings with their enormous rooms and bathrooms, some with four-poster beds, Others with sunken baths. The hotel is a treasure trove of Nepali heritage, from the elaborately carved wooden windows to the ceramic sculptures and the pottery on display. And then there’s the restaurant Krishnarpan, serving authentic and delicious Nepali fare in a meal that spans six to 22 course, brought to you in traditional plates. Traditional is not the only type of meal you’ll get in kathmandu, though; This former hotbed of hippies also has bakeries and cafes, middle-Eastern and thani food, and Thamel is a good place to try much of it.
