It's nine-hour journey from Lhasa to the Everest Base Camp, so you'll have to spend the night at Rongbuk before driving back again. And remember that you'll have to get acclimatised before you start out. Base yourself in Lhasa at the House of Shamabhala, which has the honour of being Tibet's first boutique hotel and is quintessentially Tibetan. There are just 10 rooms, each with antique painted Tibetan furniture and wood and stone décor; beds are raised on Chinese platforms. The restaurant offers tongue-in-cheek dishes like Guru Rinpoche chicken tikka and Heinrich Harrer Schnitze!
